Phil, just to clarify, this (diagram attached) is how I interpreted Richard's description. The capacitor acting to limit the current, in similar role to the resistor but not producing waste heat, rather than being employed to smooth flicker.

Yes that's the drawing Alastair. I wonder if the 2 leds were physically close together you'd get less subjective flicker as they'd each light for half a cycle opposite to each other er.. sort of push-pull LEDs?

Push-pull ones exist but as far as I can see only with different colours. Don't know if this would show as a single mixed colour, or an even more annoying two-tone flicker in the corner of your eye. Two separate adjacent LEDs might be the worst combination as it could appear to move as you moved your head.
