Default Frank Zappa

Just interested to see what the members of this forum rate as the best Zappa / Mothers albums. To be honest I am finding it is all very mood dependent and my own views are very changeable. However I think I'll make a start with Chunga's Revenge and The Yellow Shark.

Hot Rats

One Size Fits All

Joe's Garage Acts 1, 2 and 3

If anyone picks "Jazz from Hell" I'll be more than a little surprised.

Includes some great compositions, unfortunately ruined by being played on the Synclavier. Try listening to G-Spot Tornado on this and on Yellow Shark. No contest.

I'm a sucker for Apostrophe' and You are what you is.
Yellow shark is good but not one I play particularly often. I'm fortunate/sad that I have all the Ryko CDs in my collection. I think the only official one I don't have is Civilization Phase III.

Hello POD,I like everything from the begining to the end of the massive
catalogue of music that Frank put out. What was also interesting about
listening to this music was the effect it had on other people around me,
I was hated has much.It still applies today - if you turn up 'Who are the
Brain Police' your children will kill you in your sleep.

have to say
shut up and play yer guitar
when i first heard pink napkins
i wanted to cry

then i learned the bassline
the way it slides and stops
like the best slow ****
and the guitar drips from the stack
the filthiest of tunes
and no need for a lyric

i see the urban/landscape comparison
but beefheart's sure ain't pastoral
and i'm in the crowd that don't see it
but where did zappa's reggae groove come from?
it's everywhere but never tedious
like the cheap white reggae shucking along
but alive with jazz and funk and soul

you guys have got to get:
mulatu astatke - mulatu of ethiopia - ethiopian airlines
i thought frank was an original
but he must have been listening to this guy
his music is all over the film 'broken flowers'
but this album is tough and urban
and his sax player must be zappa's twin

dave

"It's him, he's watching us.......you can bet that he heard everything!" - Playground Psychotics / 200 Motels.
I think Frank Zappa listened to everything he could. If he thought it was good he listened to more, worked it out and put it into his own music. There were, amongst others, elements of Jazz, Blues, Doowop, Reggae and classical composers such as Wagner, Stravinski and Varese. A shame so few musicians do this and are content to work in limited genre's.

Just been listening to Thing-Fish; can you imagine the effect if that "musical" had ever made it to Broadway?
