5687 replacement tube.

Hi all, I am looking to replace two 5687 tubes for my WA88, also looking at 7044, E182CC and 6N6P as a substitute, the latter is way less price than the others, the E182CC is silly money, has anyone tried different tubes in their WA88 ? Bob

Hi Bob, I'm a bit late to this but did you get these sorted?

I used these in 3 amps;
WD88VA Push Pull - 2 valves as Phase splitter drivers,
WAD300B Stereo Push Pull - 1 valve as single drivers into TX phase splitters,
and Glasshouse 300B Single ended - 2 valves with paralleled sections as drivers.

I also tried 2 pairs of E182CC in place of 5687, but can't remeber which amp, and found them very bright so I'm not sure how equivalent they are. They were Mullard branded but of USA manufacture and the other pair I can't remember but NOS not new manufacture.

Personally I wouldn't use the Russians as they'll need the pin-outs rewiring and again I'm not sure how equivalent they are to 5687.

Looking through the draw I still have a pair of late Philips USA 5687 and a pair of earlier black GE, then singles of an RCA and a Jan GE 5687WB. The WAD 300B original stereo used just one and swapping different types into that didn't make much differnce to sound though all (TungSol GE RCA etc) were USA valves and I'm not sure they were made elsewhere.

Thanks for the reply Richard, I think I will stay with 5687, on ebay there are Philips ECG JAN for 25.00 each, might give them a try. The ones in my WA88 are the original and must be 20 plus years of use. Bob

Yes good decision I think, a couple of NOS 5687 will last a good while. Happy to test your old ones btw, just post them over. Be wary of un-tested used stock as some applications use just one section of these TT valves and one section may be worn out when the other is as-new

I run 6N2P as an ECC 83 equivelent in a Phono 2 from time to time
using these

(sellers confidence that they work in all amps is worrying they won't)

to reconfigure heaters for 6.3 volt they have an Ecc88 style heater set up

if the heater supply in your amp is the same, +6.3-0-6.3 you might be able to use them to run 6N6P

but check heater wireing and pin outs

i like the Russian valves seem to have added an extra octave of tuneful bass with a nice clear treble still evident

6n1p-EV makes for a nice ECC88 replacement in pre II higher heater current but seems to cause no issues with power supply
