stupid q's about 78's and tennessee ernie ford

Ok, i heard a tune i really like, sixteen tons by tennessee ernie ford.
Ive found it on 78 but dont pressently have a deck that plays 78's, however i will do soon.
But...
are 78's mono, or are some stereo?
Will i need a different cart (i use a cheap ortophon 510mk2 at the moment)?
is there anything else different about playing 78's?
Is the quality of them any good?

Anyone else like this tune, or got it and wants to sell it?

first record I ever bought, shared it with my sister, we played it on a wind up
all 78s are mono,
you should get a specific cartridge to play them

Hi-one advantage of using a tonearm with detatchable headshell is that you could have a spare one with a mono cartridge fitted.
So when you fancy a bit of 78 it only takes a minute to change.

How much will i have to spend on a cart for 78's?
Whats the sound quality like?
Should i just buy the tune on cd ?

Ive never owned/played/heard 78's, but as im probably going to end up with a lenco soon, i thought it would be nice to at least get some use from the 78 ability.

Do not use a stylus designed for microgroove (vinyl) as you will damage both the records and the stylus.

I bought an AT95E with a standard sterio stylus and an extra stylus made to play 78's from Phono Phono and find it does a good job for the money and has the advantage that you can just swap stylus to change from vinyl to 78's without changing the setup.

Of course you will get a far better sound by using a dedicated 78's mono cartridge and mono system but it all depends on how much time and resourses you want to invest in 78 replay.

There are many 78 specific stylus available for different cartridges and I now have a Shure M75ED fitted with a 78 stylus that works well.
