wilmslow fostex cabinate kits
Hello every one,
just perusing the wilmslow site and noticed the fostex flat pack kits. Has anyone tried one of these cabinates? I'm quite taken with the fe87e kit that comes in at less than £180 (plus vat and veneer and postage  ) These small horns plus a sub may on my consideration list for my next project. Are the fe87e,s ok ? will i be able to integrate a rel quake into them with good effect. Also what do horns sound like ??? Never heard any Regards Jim

The 87s are a cracking little unit. No bass -you'll need a pair of subs really, but the mids and highs are to die for. What do horns sound like? Big (for their size) as they are coupled to a large amount of air, with an absense of the dreaded box-boom.

two penneth of advice......Go listen to a pair of real horns before you commit, preferably in an environment where you can compare with non horns. They are different, and some people don't like them. Ed

Thanks for the replies,
a pair of subs is needed, is this because they don't go below the frequency that comfortably tricks our directional info? I was thinking down the lines of 1 sub cetrally placed. Yeah i do need to have a listen to some, i may have to prevail myself of a meet at some point to listen to various items. A pair of fostex are one of the shortlist of my "final pair of speaker". Just concidering them. Regards Jim

looking at it i could probably squeeze a pair of 126e's in. These would be the biggest i could fit in the living room.
Any comments about these ? Any comments about the wilmslow kit cabinates ? Regards Jim

Re the subs, right. They're not going to go down low enough as-is, and they don't have enough suspension travel to be pushed much harder.
If you're going for 126s, then I'd go for a different cabinet. See www.frugal-horn.com for some of the best small (and not so small) horns for these units around at the moment. The Wilmslow cabinets are not their design -just flat-pack offerings of the enclosure plans Fostex supply with the drivers and on their website. These are one of Fostex's better efforts, but they do need serious help in the LF.
