Since first posting on this thread the Audiolab's have gone and made way to a Croft Micro 25 Basic preamp with a Croft Series 7 power. The difference is astonishing and my vinyl sound is now amazing in the extreme. I still love the Brand X stuff but I'll be sticking with vinyl. Thanks for all of your comments.
