Hub gears, there are three makes Richard, Sturmey archer - 5 speed and 8 speed, Shimano - 8 and 11 and Rohloff - 14 speed, all are epicyclic planetary gears, the SA now made in Taiwan, is the cheaper option, the Shimano between £250 to £500 and Rohloff around £1800, the latter comes with cable or hydraulic gear change, the only down side to all these is weight, derailleur now comes in compact 12 speed giving 500%, only one front chain ring, but pricy to keep running as they only last around a year.
