Sorry the penny has just droped!!. The selector switch has two halfs. What you could do is connect the main neg to both commons on the selector switch and wire the led to the unsed half. Then whenever you have an input selected the led would light and when you select mute it would go out.

Hi Terry,

After your suggestion about using a permanent external power supply I had thought of using the unused half of the selector switch but hadn't got round to thinking through the details. Your thoughts are helpful.
