I started with 167es and was very pleased and surprised but I then moved on to something more like project no.5 using 206es - much better

That's right David. If you reduce the port diameter to 2", you can also use the FF165k to superb effect. I like the whizzerless drivers most. It won't go as loud, but the midrange is deeper and smoother, and you get a touch more bass. Flatter response too. You get used to the looks; I like them, as you've guessed (I wouldn't have built 3 pairs if I didn't) but you can mount the driver on one of the other sides if you prefer; it won't alter the (excellent) performance.
The larger drivers in straight, mass-loaded enclosures are also excellent. I've built two pairs, one of which was a wide-baffle design eqperiment, which was very interesting. I tend to favour the FE207E over the FE206E myself as it has a touch more bass, at the expense of a whisker of detail (it's got detail to throw away though).
