BTW I tried Greg.'s account, with his permission, and didn't have a problem with staying logged in for 15 minutes inactivity. So it looks like it is something to do with cookie storage on your local machine. The vBulletin forum also seems to indicate that if cookies are sorted out then logins seem to get better. But we won't know if it is a complete cure unless everyone reports back. |

Re: Tweaking the Settings
Hi Peter,
I've just left the forum logged in for one and a half hours with no activity. On return, I'm still logged in. It probably is something to do with the remember me tick. I don't actually understand the function here. I thought it was a means to remember my password to speed log in but that doesn't seem to be the case and as I didn't (actually still don't) understand the function, I never bothered with it. Making the tick default seems to have done the job. What is the actual purpose of this tick function? Incidentally, I regularly clear cookies and stored internet files, so I don't think that is the cause. Anyway things seem to be working now. Thank-you. Best wishes, Greg |

It seems that the VB techies were right in your case (even though their thread does also talk about similar issues even when Peter's fix had been applied by others!) I had understood the tick box to mean 'Remember Me' and not 'Remember My Password', but I had also forgotten the first rule of IT support: never assume anything! I had suggested you tick the box back on the 2nd of January, (see post #3 of this thread) and had assumed you had done so then, and every time you would have logged in after manually clearing your cookies. By not ticking that box you were not writing a permanent cookie to your PC, your login was just given a session cookie (like when visiting the RS website) which removed itself after a Server (Peter) defined time-period. I hope that the rest of your WD forums usage will now be a breeze! Last edited by Lord.; 21st January 2006 at 02:09 PM. |
