OFF TOPIC: should I trust this site?

Ladies and Gents,

I have placed an order with a site based in New York (here). Now ive looked into the site and completerly trusted them so placed an order via credit card for an xmas present for my girlfriend. The order was for earrings at over a grand.

The site emailed me back today and said for overseas orders they need a fax of a picture of :- both sides of my credit card, a photo id, and proof of billing and shipping address.

Im not sure i want to send this sort of information to a company at the other side of the world.

Ive emailed back to say im going to contact my credit card company and ask them which i will do tomorrow.

Should i trust them?? Or should i say, would you trust them?

Being such a high value order they are probably trying to establish you actually have and own the card.

Such is fraud these days

As to giving that sort of info, I definitely would consult your card company and make sure they will insure this transaction at the same time.

Would I do it, sorry but no I wouldn't, but then I'm a sceptic.....

Sounds like excellent advice to me.... beware 'identity theft' and all that..

This is quite normal nowadays - particularly with reasonably priced orders. As Darren says, they're most likely establishing that you are the real owner of the credit card. Even sellers through dear old Paypal will sometimes ask for the same info if the buyer is not verified.

Bear in mind that an image of the back of your card will reveal the security number which , in theory, would allow someone to use the card for all sorts of 'buyer not present' transactions.

Even if the request is genuine I would cover that detail.
