Shunt mod, TOO LOUD MAN !
I've done the shunt mod to the vol pot on my KEL84, but now its WAY too loud.
Could it be that I have used a 4.7kohm resistor instead of a 47K one ? I need to be able to listen quietly as I mostly listen at night when the kids are in bed, usual volume position was '9 o clock'. |

Re: Shunt mod, TOO LOUD MAN !
Assuming a 47k pot, using 47k series resistors will give a similar "feel" to the law around the mid points of travel and reduce max level -6dB.
Using 4k7 resistors will cause the volume to ramp up very fast and is probably not much use with typical sources. Using 100k resistors will cause a slower ramp but limit max level -9dB. 150k resistors slower still and -12dB max level etc. I mention these latter values as they can be very useful with sensitive speakers or for the likes of Pre3 which has a +15dB gain to start with which may be too great with line level power amps. Re: Shunt mod, TOO LOUD MAN !
Thanks Richard !
My speakers are fairly sensitive @ 89db, I will try 100k resistors and see what that goes like. Guess I thought it would be a straight forward mod, but it requires a bit of calculation doesn't it........ Its all good fun. |

Re: Shunt mod, TOO LOUD MAN !
Do the latest kits come with the shunt mode stuff supplied and illustrated in drawing?
