Relay board
Hello one and all,
The input selector switch of my KEL84 has been playing up a little lately, sometimes needing a little wobble of the knob to get sound out of both channels. I thought fitting the relay switched inputs would be a good idea if I was having to pull it apart. I contacted Matthew who said he can supply the parts, but he says the sockets are spaced at 14mm between inputs and 19 mm between channels but mine measures, as far as I can see, 15mm and 20mm. Between 2 adjacent inputs, 1mm might be within wiggle room but over 5 inputs that would be 5mm which is obviously no good. Does anyone know if the spacings have changed over the years ? I built my amp in 2006. Phil.

Re: Relay board
Hi Phil,
Just measured a relay PCB and concur with Matthew's measurements. I do not think that the dimensions have changed over the years, so the thing to do is get the parts kit and before you build it offer uo the PCB to the sockets. If, as you say, the dimensions are different then the solution is simple, short lengths of tinned copper wire from board to sockets. If not then all is straightforward. 1) Mount the relays in sockets 2) Do not solder all around the centre connection just a small blob is adequate. John |

Thanks for that John.

Re: Relay board
Is there a price available for the board and components?

Re: Relay board
I am sure there is, ask Matthew at World Designs.

Re: Relay board
To quote Matthew,
"Even though I don't supply a relay upgrade kit per se, I can provide the components for it, and some instructions that would help you on your way (the relevant pages from the current KEL84 manual) and I'm happy to take a telephone call if necessary. Everything you'd need (including signal cable if required) would be £40.00. Postage (UK) free." Phil.

Re: Relay board
Well at least I know I can still use a steel rule !
Odd though, as no one knows of any changes. Phil.

Re: Relay board
Hi Phil,
Just pulled out the relay board that I have and it is identical to yours, so all I can suggest is use short lengths of TCW to connect to the connectors, and mount it essentially back to front. If you mount the relays in DIL sockets they will be easier to change in the event of failure. John |

Re: Relay board
Yes John, I'm sure I will be able to sort something out. It may be useful for anyone else who wants to do this on an old KEL84 (what about other older amps ?) to know that there will be a bit more to it than a current production build.
Regards, Phil.
