Question 12v POWER SUPPLY FOR DAC

Hi-i have now purchased the non oversampling DAC from Derek Shek on e-bay and am delighted with its performance with the supplied power supply (wart) but Derek admits that a better supply would improve performance.
i have an adjustable bench power supply which i used for the belt drive turntable motor (made redundant by the Dual) which i could try or can anyone suggest a circuit for a High Quality supply.
I would rather not mess with Transistors so perhaps a torroid transformer, bridge rectifier and choke would be suitable ?
just have the "itch" to build something electrical !!!!

Philip

Well I think a Super reg from ALW or a simple pre-tracking reg based around some adjustable 3 terminal regulators would work really well. something like this, artwork and inspiration from ALW Audio:

your best bet is a 12 v charger for a lead acid battery ,as the battery will give you the cleanest dc you can get fo the dac.

From www.diyparadise.com -->

The pink trace is the noise spectra of an unloaded battery.
The blue trace is the noise spectra of discrete low noise regulator. Indeed battery is better!
But when there is a load of 35mA, see the cyan trace! Now the battery is worse than the regulator!

Battery looks worse under load to me. So i would have a listen to both to decide for yourselves.

Thanks

Paul

I've got one spare if you want to try it.

I am unsure just how much of that is actually from the battery. If it is, its the first battery I have seen with a peak at 50hz!!!!

It may be that the battery is a higher source impedance than the regulator, so that trace is a measure of the noise sectrum of the load.

I actually wanted to do something like this myself when i first started looking into a 12v source. But i dont have the experiance and couldnt find any idiot proof guides on the internet. So if you do find a decent circuit then i would be most interested in seeing it

Looks like a political broadcast on behalf of the Regulator Party.

I was wondering the same myself. Peaks at 50 150 250 350 450 Hz add up to a 50Hz squarewave somewhere in the system (am I correct?).
