Re: Phono Shoot-Out, Buddam's 401
Adrians lovely Garrard 401 fitted with OL RB250 are and 'Heavyweight' counter weight and Dynavector MC cartridge. Cleverly CLD constructed using chipboard and concrete for the plinth, covered in black perspex in such a way that the CLD principle is not compromised and also incorporating decoupling of the armboard from the chassis. It sounded full and authoritative, yet delicate and detailed when appropriate. A great example of what can be done with a 40 year old deck to trounce the performance of many modern TT's.

Re: Phono Shoot-Out, Buddam's 401
It turned out later in the day Greg that the Technics DD which this deck tranced e rlier came good. Gerry at the 11th hour suddenly realised that the Garrard had been on the Ikea table and his had been on his elaborate platform and Target stand.
All our jaws hit the floor. The Techincs was fixed, it caught up to speed and played with swing. We just couldn't believe the transformation. We no longer had Adran's Garrard to reevaluate, but rest assured the DD is a very nice turntable. Just Gerry had an unfortunate combination of supports which strangled the lifge out of it. I know that in day one some people thought it was slow but it was checked and Gerry was very confident in all his speed monitoring equipment. Yet it did sound awful at that time. Who would have thought the answer to get all that hi tech stuff working right was twenty quids worth of basic looking four legged unspiked pine table. So we who remained are all off to Ikea asap.

No, they are INGOs - the rectangular side table variant at £11.99.
We specifically chose these for the Bristol Show as the best equipment tables we could find. They are lightweight and torsionally rigid. Presumably the pound coins under the spikes of the 401 plinth are a tried and tested 'tweak'!!! |

Re the coins: I think they were just trying not to dig holes into the table.

Re: Phono Shoot-Out, Buddam's 401
The ROI on 1p coins would be better, whatever the use...

Re: Phono Shoot-Out, Buddam's 401
What a good job Peter left those tables and Gerry as a last minute afterthought decided to try one. I would have been consigned to a lifetime of believing DD's were slow and rythmless. How wrong I would have been, in the end the timing was note perfect better than anything I have experienced. The base was there, though from memory the Garrard may have been heavier on base, maybe different not better just a change of tone.
