Mark, Ray,

No, Try it on one machine, log out then clear all cookies in IE and log back in and you'll find the BB still shows just the same number of new (red) posts. Therefore the visit memory is in the database against your username. The Welcome message, top right, also shows the time you last visited (using that user name).

Just a note on the red (new) posts BTW. I've just been reminded by Matt that the red doesn't always go after one read during a quick visit so there is perhaps a time element involved somewhere. I suspect the number of people shown as being on the BB also has an adjustable time window.

None of this info is held/logged on the users machine though AFAIK.

Oh, and I've just editted the last post and reminded myself there's a time element there too; if you edit within a short time you can save it without it adding a note about the edit........

Richard,
when you say the new posts are red, what do you mean?

Hi David,

Don't you get this with new posts? It's always been a feature of every php BB I go on by default but I'll see if it's poss yours has been turned off,

There is an option to update the database immediately with every new post (and other events) but it takes its toll on database performance so I've left the default of an update every few minutes or so.

But unless each user leaves the threads they read open for those few minutes the database doesn't catch their visit, leading to the types of posts above.
An update every 10 seconds or so is the only workable compromise I fear...

I've changed the method of read thread marking. Can you see whether it helps?

Unfortunately it has reset everyone to not having read ANY threads, so you'll have to go through each thread now to show it read!

Sorry for this but it should lead to greater accuracy re unread threads from now on.

Thumbs up Organised.

Seems much better now Peter.

After catching up on anything posted 'Today' and then clicking on the 'Mark All Forums Read' QuickLink I logged out and logged back in a while later. The board now seems to behave as expected with regards to posts and forums displaying as read or new, thanks!
