It's important that the earths are the same potential.
If you connect your gear to a mains board you should be ok, as the earth is effectively common, and at the same potential in all of the equipment.

If you have a ground loop problem then you should cure the problem by making sure that all is earthed to the same point.

My amp does not have an earth contact via the mains plug, so I connected an earth wire to a 13A plug top, and attached this to the chassis of my amp, and this cured the ground loops that were causing me problems.

Be warned - it is possible to get a belt off earths of different potential. Keep your fingers away from the earth while you test things out.

Hi Mallen

How did you get on with finding your souce of hum ?
Was it down to a ground loop ?

Hi All,

I didnt have time to investigate until the weekend.
I think it is the cartridge that is playing up. Tried feeding
it into an old midi system and there is still hum. I am going
to give John Wright a call today (the Decca man) and see
if he could take a look at it for me. Ill keep you posted.
