C3g into 6C33 - this version works!

And this is what has been cooking since Tuesday.

Audion call this the 'Panzer' ... yeah, whatever!

C3g driving 6C33. & interesting it is too.

At last the 6C33 is showing some very listenable to class. This version started off with one transformer supplying all the voltages and solid state rectification too. And then I started adding transformers and chokes and the improvement has been marked. You can't have too many transformers, it seems!

This amp is hot, very hot and I am not talking transformers or cathode resistors. The valves themselves really give out tons of heat. The 600ohm output transformers are £60 the pair Hong Kongers (Eastern Audio), so nothing special there. I suspect the C3 is a totally sophisticated and lovely valve (thanks James) as quite a few of us have been discovering mainly with PT15.

Audion have a very similar (to Panzer) way of driving 211 too if anyone is interested. If I didn't use Ongaku, I would definitely try this.

But unless the buggar melts down and continues to give me tinnitus by playing everything from Schubert to Jimi Hendrix very loud indeed, I will bring the 'Panzer' to Martin's 'do' in a couple of weeks time. I have tried three different ways of driving 6C33 before and they were not good at all. This is so much better.

Are you getting a substantial amount of power out of the 6C33's with those trannies and op point then ? - am I right they can give 18 Watts or so ( in theory ) - I seem to remember the commercial one ( forgotten the name ) was billed as 18 W SE .

eh, whatsthatyousaysonny? can't hear a darn' thing, been listenin' to the amp for too long and it is too dam' loud!

How do you measure power out in a meaningful way? It is very loud into 93dB sensitive speakers and doesn't wander off into distortion so readily as most other amps I have tried.

So from experience of how watts and power sound I would say that yes, I am in the teens.

- assuming as crude rule of thumb that 200 watts is twice as loud as 20 watts is twice as loud as 2 watts

- 6C33 has more 'welly', 'fullness' and is a bit louder than 300b.

The Graff amps use 4 6C33s and can be OTL'd too. These must be very powerful sounding or will drive silly modern insensitive speakers. As for central heating, you wouldn't need it!

Still sounds good but I am losing SPL and the HT transformer is physically humming. I only need about 250ma at 205 volts or so - not much to ask for is it! 6C33 heaters are down to about 5.2 volts too - bloody hell.
