Re: Stepped Attenuator
There is no reason not to use the shunt mod on a stepper. I do that, works fine.

Re: Stepped Attenuator
Hi-i also use a "stepper" in shunt mode but at the time i posted the details Petercom suggested it may not sound any different to a shunted Alps as the signal was going throgh the external resistors on both.
As i have not tried the stepper in normal mode (yet) i cant comment. Philip

Re: Stepped Attenuator
Hi, the ground resistor (pot track) makes a difference to the sound as well as the signal resistor. I tried the shunt arrangement using the same signal resistors on an Alps Blue and Panasonic and they are a very different sound. Nicest for me was an Alps Blue with metalfilms. Going to carbon resistors makes it warmer. Going to the Pan pot with metalfilms is incredibly detailed.

Re: Stepped Attenuator
Well I have made and fitted my seven way stepped ladder volume control and to my mind its definatly more transparent and accurate. I had to strip the switch first to clean the contacts with some silver polish then to apply contact fluid to keep it clean and lubricated
I did,t mention at the time that I was using a pseudo wire wound 50K volume control which was a little noisy and not very accurate at the lower end so that,s why I decided to try this ladder method and over hall it seems quite an improvement. Acorn |
