Hal55,
As I have much more experience with the standard tweeter I would not like to make a direct comparison, because I have not done an AB comparison.

I may be tempted to upgrade to the excel one day, not because of hearing anything better in this regard, or from immediate comparison with this (or any other speakers tweeters for that matter).

Peters enthusiasm for the excel tweeter and the greater technical suitability on paper of the excel unit makes me curious.

Having seen a couple of technical comparisons of tweeter performance the standard unit it is not outright inferior to the excel unit.
Indeed it is actually notably superior in some respects, even to the top of the range Excel Crescendo and even the scanspeak revelator models according to some technical sources.
It could actually be the superior tweeter (merely on paper technical performance -not necessarily subjectively) for loudspeakers with a higher required crossover frequency, such as an application with a 5 1/4 midrange drivers. For those Bat eared fans of SACD and DVDA (with childlike hearing capabilities) it could be the model to go for.

The Excel will be less distorted than the standard tweeter at the crossover point. World designs work on the standard model disguises this extremely well, I cannot hear it in isolation. Perhaps I am missing detail at the crossover, or it could be even cleaner.

Of course as the excel works more accurately to a lower octave or so it is much better suited to marrying to a 10 inch Bass driver.

Basically with a higher budget you can shrink the compromises and get the right tweeter for the job.

We sold those when they were new (i don't think i personally ever sold a pair).

Flat response, but very staid, and quite boring IMHO.
