Hi David,

I have once owned one and the wooden version, but in regard of my cartridge type preferences, I sold them back: these tonearms are extra light dynamic mass, I think in the 6 range and therefore only allow the use of very compliant cartridges....not my cup of tea

thanks Francois,
unfortunately not what I wanted to hear, I was rather hoping it might be suitable for a DL103,

now I know why Grace used to offer a lead weight for the h/shell

oh well, looks like it's back on ebay for it and I'll look for a Grace 940

sad because it's a great looking arm

Hi David.

If you are going to get a 103 anyway, why not get the cart and try it on the 704 first. The same ethos says that a 103 should not work on a Sonus, Mayware or Signet, but they do (allegedly). Worth a try before you sell the arm on, surely?

You can borrow my 103 if you like to try before you buy? Let me know if you fancy that first. That way you can hear a 103 and on both of your arms before you sell anything.

Cheers

I was feeling a bit depressed when I read Francois's post, I'm feeling better now

you're right of course I'll get a 103 and try it anyway,

as I understand it the 103 is medium compliance so it should work with an arm with a mass of 6,

David,
Well, mmmm, not exactly, the 103 is a low compliance cartridge, one of the lowest ones (5) and, on the paper, should match with high mass arms (around 20 and more).
When I tried it on my 704, I had to add so much mass at the headshell that the counterweight was not heavy enough to balance it....therefore, I had to add mass to the counterweight, but the results were not really there, as I suspect the wand not to be rigid enough after all this added masses.....
But there is nothing like a try to know if you like it or not
