8 ohm op transformer with 4 ohm speaker
i just bought speakers with 4 ohm impedance (JMR trente) which i plan to drive with a kat6550 amp. the amp has dynaco mkII output transformers (A430) that have only 8 and 16 ohm taps. only the 8ohm wires are connected.
is there any potential damage to components in the amp when driving these speakers? thanks dan |

Re: 8 ohm op transformer with 4 ohm speaker
No you wont damage anything. You'll have less power though and the o/p stage will produce more distortion, bass may sound a little wooly as well.

Re: 8 ohm op transformer with 4 ohm speaker
What about the zero transformers type of product that allows better matching? much too expensive but is the idea sound?

Re: 8 ohm op transformer with 4 ohm speaker
well, i hooked the amp to the speakers and didn't like the results. the speakers sounded wonderful when driven by a kat88 with original transformers. looking for new optputs now

i wrote Per Lundahl, he didn't know which model and suggested i ask one of his distributors sowters are a proven choice, as with Tony Moore and Richard's amps but are mightily expensive Last edited by dan_s; 23rd February 2008 at 09:29 AM. |
