Re-wiring Output Transformers
Hi,
As part of my DIY amp build I'm recycling my old KEL84 output transformers, however the snag I've hit is that the leads from these transfromers aren't long enough for the layout of the new chassis I'm using. Therefore I was wondering if it was practical/safe to trim the leads from the output transfromers back and join on new wire of the correct length? i.e leave about 10-20mm of the original lead at the transformer, solder on new wire and then cover the join with heatshrink. I know I could probably add on additional wire to the exisiting leads but I'm looking for a neater finish that that would provide. Just thought it would be better to ask what is probbaly an obvious question before I butchered my output transformers. Regards, Ewan |

Re: Re-wiring Output Transformers
Perfectly fine as far as I can see . Maplin do most colours to match if wanted. The only other thing I'd consider is leaving 3 or 4 inches before the joins, in case you mess-up or need to extend/change again later, as the leads are potted I think. It will still look neat if they are similar lengths so no need to go too short.

Re: Re-wiring Output Transformers
Hi Rich,
Thanks for the reply and the very sensible suggestion to leave myself a little more of the original lead in case I need to modify the lengths at a later date. I assume something like this would be suitable to use http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?...=6197&doy=13m8 ? Regards, Ewan |

Re: Re-wiring Output Transformers
Yes, 16/0.2 1000v 3A, that's the stuff I'd use.
