Rotel rq970 phono amp mods
I am in the process of modding this beer budget phono stage inline with an article published by andy grove in HFW but need some advide re opamps.
the mods suggest replacing the NE5534 op amps with ad744's which are getting difficult to get hold of unless you pay a premium....so my fahter who has retired from the electronics worlds had a rummage in his box of 'rescued' parts and suggested a pair of OP37's in place of the NE5534 as they are better spec than the ne's and should drop straight in with no circuit mods - can anyone comment if this will work and is it likely to sound better than the NE's...? Thanks, Phil |

Re: Rotel rq970 phono amp mods
Hi Phil,
I had a play with this project a few years ago, mostly to increase the gain as i was using a Shure V15VxMR cart which seemed to have a low output for a MM. I thought that my modified RQ970BX sounded brilliant. I eventually 'upgraded' to a Rotal Michi RQ10 which i still use, but if I'm being really, really honest, i reckon that the modified RQ970 sounded every bit as good as my Michi, unfortunately i didn't have the looks or the badge and so being rather shallow i sold it to a German rotel collector who was extremely happy with his purchase via e-bay... Her are a few pics from my RQ970BX modification adventure: http://imageevent.com/sidandcoke/rotelrq970bxmod Tim. |

Re: Rotel rq970 phono amp mods
Hi Phil,
I upgraded 5534 in my cdp to OPA604 (and dual 5532 to OPA2604). These work fine as drop in replacements (unlike others I tried inc ADs which oscillated and would have needed more work) and, I see, are still available from RS for a few pounds. Rich |
