Marantz/Philips CD40 squealing!
Hi Guys,
I have 2 of these, one was quiet but now they both make a squealing sound for a second or two at switch on. It seems to be from the drawer rubber band drive trying to close the draw which is already shut. They've both had new tray gears and bands recently. I tried wiping the bands and wheels with alcohol. Anyone had similar or know the fix? |

Hi Richard
No help sorry just to say my Marantz 52SE sometimes does the same thing never have found out the problem and it tries to take my fingers off by opening and closing on its own when inserting a disc on occasions

GGG Granville
Richard squealing sound at switch on is mostly due to the removal of the mute transistor with pre volume up at listing level I hear this on both my marantz 52SE and the 67 mk2 if I have left the vol up

Re: Marantz/Philips CD40 squealing!
ha ha love the picture but this is a mechanical noise from the drawer, a sort of creaking squeal and is there just powering up the player alone without any other connection. With the cover off you can see the motor trying to close the draw and the belt squealing. What I don't know is if there should be a microswitch circ telling it that the drawer is already closed, or if it does this anyway to check the drawer is closed and stops trying after a set time or no more movement is detected. If that is the case it may just be that the belts are both too slippy or soft.

Re: Marantz/Philips CD40 squealing!
Ho right
In the 52SE there’s a white bar at the back right which the tray hits and pushes back and down Operates a micro switch I think it’s a long time since I have been under the bonnet of the 52 it may be the white bar that’s sticking and riding on the switch I can see the tray on My 52 give a small sort of wiggle at switch on I think the white bar is the sources of my 52s tray opening and closing randomly when inserting a disc

Re: Marantz/Philips CD40 squealing!
Hi Col,
Yes I remembered similar microswitches so had a look today and there seems to be that one and another at the front presumably for drawer out and drawer in. Anyway, with the bonnet off it was clear the noise was from the belt slipping on the motor pulley. Whipped it off and compared it to the old ones. I fixed 2 players with the same gear and belt kits and fortunately kept the old belts and the new belts are definitely softer. The old ones may be harder due to age but they aren't cracked so I cleaned one with alcohol, fitted it, and no slip and no noise result! I'll do the other player some time too. |
