Tube rolling - Mullard vs Brimar vs JJ
Dug out some old tubes from a suitcase I had under the stairs and had completely forgotten about.
I have 2 x Mullard Long plates and 2 x Brimar - 1 long plate one normal. The valves in my Pre 3 and Phono 3 are all JJ's. Question is, am I better off swapping the JJ's over for Mullards or Brimars ? Are the older valves generally better sonically ? Thanks in advance Jonny |

Re: Tube rolling - Mullard vs Brimar vs JJ
Hi Jonny, you don't say what the valves you found under the stairs are, your PRE III needs ECC82 & the phono needs ECC83. Is this what you have?. BOB

Re: Tube rolling - Mullard vs Brimar vs JJ
Sorry Bob - valves are all ECC83's and 12AX7 for the Brimars. Got a single Mullard ECC82 for the Pre so far
Thanks Jonny |

Simples. Roll all the tubes and use the set that sound best.

Re: Tube rolling - Mullard vs Brimar vs JJ
Agreed - however, I would need another ECC82 and ECC 83 of each make to get a full set and rather than starting with 3 full sets I'd prefer to know which generally sounds the better of the three types and see how I go from there.

Re: Tube rolling - Mullard vs Brimar vs JJ
You can try the two mullard or the brimer's in the phono in V2 and leave the JJ in V4, you can even try the ECC82 in V4, but do not try the ECC83 / 12AX7 in the PREIII as you will have too much gain, all these valves are the same pinout. BOB
