WD step up transformers

A friend of mine is considering upgrading his Dynavector 20X2 high output moving coil cartridge to a Dynavector Te Kaitora Rua. A low output cartridge.

This means he needs some way of amplifying the signal.

He has a Linn Akurate preamp which can be configured to accept low output MCs, but he's quite taken with the idea of using an off board step up transformer. The Dynavector one is about £1400, an Ortofon one would be about £900.

It seems to me the WD SUTs fitted in the WD case or another suitable case, and loaded correctly for his new cartridge, would do the job just as well, at a fraction of the cost. Presumably WD could sell me just the SUTs and the case.

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

I don't think that's a fair question to ask here. I've never done a comparison anyway. I'm just very happy with the Lundahls I use.

I have used Lundahls, WAD, WD and Sowter step ups and prefer the Sowters out of all especially the 8055, but note this is a personal preference.
From what I could see, measure and hear they are all much on a muchness ie very, very good with none being "better" (whatever that means) than the other.

Having discovered the Linn is really easy to reconfigure for low output moving coils I think that's the way my friend is likely to go--at least to start with.

To reconfigure the Linn I have to take out one circuit board which connects via 8 or 12 pins, turn it round and place it back in with the new orientation. Very clever!

So, reconfigure the Linn, then look to an offboard something or other in a few months.
