Default KLS 3 upgrade project completed!

At long last the summer's upgrade project on my Peter Comeau modified KLS 3s is complete. At times I thought I'd never get there!

The upgrade has comprised;
  • Plaited Mundorf silver and gold wire from binding posts to drive units;

    All capacitors replaced with ClarityCap polypropylenes from either the ESA or MR range;

    All resistors replaced with Mills wire wound ones;

    All coils replaced with Mundorf copper foil coils, either air cored or Ferron cored;

    WBT nextgen silver binding posts.

All components have been fixed securely onto an MDF board with anti resonance material stuck to it, and connected with tag strips.

The final step was to revisit the value of the bypass capacitors in the bass section of the crossover. Good though the bass was, it seemmed a bit too strong and not quite tight enough. After much experimentation an increase in the value of the bypass capacitance from 68 uF to 71.8 uF rectified this.

How do they sound?

Wonderful!

Beautifully clean, clear presentation, with firm bass and a well balanced mid and treble.

The music flows naturally, showing the inherently high quality of the Audax and SEAS drivers used.

It's been great fun, working through the upgrades. As each component went in I had a critical listen to check everything was going in the right direction. I'd thought about doing the whole lot in one go but realised it wouldn't be nearly as enjoyable, I'd never know what had gone wrong if it sounded awful, plus the step approach meant I could spread the cost.

Here's some pictures.

Guy

Yes, Chris, they have either been removed from the original hosting account or they were free storage on ‘photobucket’ which no longer offers this free hosting service. They do however offer the free storage service at their sister site, ’tinnypics’.

Hi Guy, did the Mundorf Silver/Gold wire bring a big improvement over what you had before, it's really very expensive, am about to put together a new crossover for my Kls 10's and trying to decide what wire/cable to use.

Chris.

My view is much of this is unnecessary. Extend to quality silver plated OF copper as sold by Matthew here or also helpfully at IPL Accoustics.

Mundorfs are good but in a crossover, I’d not go beyond Supremes which I have satisfactorily used. Certainly replace all electrolytic with polypropylene if you have the space for the bigger size. Resistors can benefit for a change to non inductive such as Mills and maybe get a higher wattage rating to give them an easier less heat producing time.

I found this on another forum, so can't claim credit. I use Firefox as a browser and can verify that this fix works. I can now see all the images that were formerly blocked by Photobucket. Haven't tried the Chrome fix, but I have no reason to think it won't work.

If you're using Google Chrome, go to the three dots on the right side of the screen and click them. A drop down should appear. Hover your mouse over "More Tools," and when the next drop down appears, click on extensions. Go to the link towards the bottom that says "Get more extensions." In the search box, type "Photobucket Fix," and hit enter. Click the install button and once it's done, you should be able to see photobucket pictures again.

For FireFox users, click on the three bars on the right side of the screen, then click on add ons. Click search for "photobucket hotlink" and click install. Same result

found this on another forum not a clue poss it will help ?
