Default Garrard 401 Paint

Aaron previously asked what paint was used and how to remove it for a re-paint.

Aaron, I don't know the exact make-up of the paint used but I suspect it's Cellulose. I would suggest you don't remove the paint. Two reasons,

Firstly: 401s (& 301s) chassis are cast. If you strip the paint off you are likely to be left with a lot of pits in the casting which may cause you problems when painting. I would therefore suggest you flatten and tidy up the existing paintwork, prime it and respray.
Secondly: It's an alloy chassis, painting bare ally is not impossible but can present its own problems.

I have another pretty specific question regarding the TT bearing. I'll refer you (and anyone else) to this particular auction I spotted just a few moments ago on ePray:

I noticed that the sintered bronze thrust plate in the photo in the auction has a convex top. Mine (serial #4300) has a flat top.

Is the convex thrust plate a feature on later 401s, or is my thrust plate simply worn down to flatness?

I have my doubts as to the 2nd hypothesis because I *know* that my particular 401 has seen little use, but I just thought I'd confirm it with someone (hopefully someone experienced) here.

And oh, anyone have any opinions as to the potential benefits of this mod? Wouldn't prolonged use with this bearing "upgrade" cause a concave pattern of wear on the flat end of the spindle?

(And yes, we worked things out in a gentlemanly fashion indeed. )

Hi Aaron,

You'll forgive me for not posting a reply. In the current climate one can become tired from being undermined and underpinned.

I can be contacted via other methods and will of course help you in the best way I am able. I can't promise to be 100% accurate but any knowledge I have is freely available to whomever asks. I also offer services to those who don't wish to, or are unable to, tackle certain aspects themselves.

But to some this seems unacceptable so I am withdrawing from giving advice on this forum for the time being.
