BTW Phil, I meant to ask if you're using a moving coil and if so what SUT you use?

Phil, yesterday I had the first opportunity to hear how the PSU cap change to Mundorf’s in Tony’s KiT6550 has influenced the sound in his system. What a great improvement to transparency and a sound that now seems just right. Also, noise floor has dropped and the mains Tx has stopped physically buzzing. Also, no short term buzz/hum through the speakers when the amp is first switched on through current inrush.

We are now thinking about doing Tony’s phono stage. He has the WD Series 3 version and obviously does not have a Pre 3, so PSU 3 is only feeding a Phono 3.
I just wanted to confirm which caps you replaced in your phono/PSU, which I think is a sort of scratch built WAD PSU/Phono 2. Have you done all the electrolytics or just the large ones?

Hi Greg,

You are right, I did not build my Phono from the kit so it has some differences, especially the PSU. I've had a look and I don't seem to have a copy of the series 3 circuit, perhaps if you email me the circuit for that, then I can compare and make some suggestions.

Phil.

The circuit is identical, save for the regulator and regulator control. Bob

Worked this out for myself in the end. For the information of anyone contemplating making this upgrade to PSU3, the caps to replace are C1 and C2. Pre3 also requires change to C4 and Phono3 change to C17.

Here’s a good place to buy Mundorf’s.
