Replacement for Usher S520 bass/mid driver
I use a pair of these speakers in a secondary unit. Having finally got my record deck sorted out, a tried it through a commercial phono preamp which worked only at maximum volume. I left it playing for a few moments after which maybe a relay kicked in or a capacitor charged or something. Anyway, 100 watts got blasted through the speakers resulting in one of the bass/mid driver coils getting burned out. There is no longer an Usher dealer in the uk, so a replacement would probably have to be sourced from Taiwan - not easy. Alternatives are to replace both bass/mid drivers with something very similar, or to see if the voice coil could be rewound.
Any suggestions? Thanks David |

Hi David,
Try Wembley Loudspeakers in Shepherds Bush, London W12 they may be able to rewind it for you. John |

I hate that sort of reply if no link is offered. Yes I know it is easy to find but it annoys the whatever out of me.
Sorry, Richard, just having a rant. ......................blood pressure is down and I’m normalising gently |

Re: Replacement for Usher S520 bass/mid driver
Bob, if the engine on your car blows these days you'll weigh up all the options. Getting it fixed probably isn't one of them. It will take a long time, cost a lot, and may not work well again anyway. Most folk go for another car.
David asked for suggestions. Wembley speakers may be able to help as John says, certainly worth a phone call. Another idea is to look down that link and there are 2 nice pairs of complete speakers for not a lot of money. There is also a tweeter and a crossover so it might be worth an eBay message to see if the seller has a bass/mid but it probably tells us they may be in the habit of blowing/being blown. So if I were David I'd decide how much I wanted to stick with Ushers and decide if it was worth the money for a secondhand pair. At least that route would have me up and running in a few days and I'd have some spare units to sell or keep. |

No need to apologize Bob, I hadn't explained my thinking
Just clicked that link again and there're now 3 pairs on! This pair (direct link below) is even cheaper with damaged cabs - may be worth messaging the seller, https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Usher-S52...wAAOSwWcVeRmbA |

Re: Replacement for Usher S520 bass/mid driver
Thanks for your help, guys. I found the proposed cost of getting the unit rewound was greater than replacing it! The Usher distributor in Holland had a spare for me to purchase and I am awaiting delivery now.
