Default WAD 2A3 PSE rebuild

Ooo, I’m a bit excited. The guy I sold my heavily modded Pre/Phono/PSU II to a couple of years ago has offered it for sale back to me and I’m buying it. This means I need to re-assemble my 2A3 PSE which I dismantled in a failed plan to upgrade to a two box system. I’ll never get rid of my Devialet, but I’m really excited about getting a valve based amplification system together again which I can swap to at my leisure. I’ll keep you posted.

Sounds interesting Greg, i'm not sure I have even ever seen a picture of the WAD 2A3 amp!

You may have forgotten but you have heard my 2A3 amp twice in the past at Owston.

So, the rebuild has started. If you want to follow this really closely, I suggest you read alongside my upgrade articles recorded in the FAQ thread.

So far, I have refitted the mains Tx and the output Tx’s, the 2A3 single diode heater modules that replaced the original bridge rectifiers. I’ve fitted a new Audio Note choke supplied through Hi-Fi Collective as the original was underrated. See

http://www.world-designs.co.uk/forum...ighlight=Choke

A while back, I removed the Dynamicap coupling caps I had fitted so I could loan them to a friend for a listening trial. Although they were returned to me, I’ve not refitted them and now have bought in a set of Mondorf Supremes to do the service which will need to be soldered in. I like Mundorf polypropylene.

Tomorrow I will remove the ill advised bypass caps on the 40uF initial PSU cap after the rectifier (my modifications, see forum links, as originally 100uF). It seems that bypassing caps applied to power supply caps is not these days considered beneficial. I don’t know until I can actually listen to the difference.

There after, it’s just all about hooking up all the wires. Something that try as I may, I just can’t get enthusiastic about. Oh well, surely I’ll get there in the end!

You'll get there Greg when the time is right, no rush.

Looking forward to you getting the result you want.
