Hub gears, there are three makes Richard, Sturmey archer - 5 speed and 8 speed, Shimano - 8 and 11 and Rohloff - 14 speed, all are epicyclic planetary gears, the SA now made in Taiwan, is the cheaper option, the Shimano between £250 to £500 and Rohloff around £1800, the latter comes with cable or hydraulic gear change, the only down side to all these is weight, derailleur now comes in compact 12 speed giving 500%, only one front chain ring, but pricy to keep running as they only last around a year. I miss biking and running, having got back from a run a few years back I found that I was unable to run any more the knees had packed in.

I have a gym in the garden so now it's the upper body, pull-ups in the snow, barbell frozen to the grass, the joy of fresh air and feeling alive.

Chris.
