I looked it up, something I'd not come across before.

I need to understand the implications of how and why.

I think I remember the BBC iPlayer saying you cannot watch it abroad, so possibly others have similar restrictions.
Conceivably, the BBC may have purchased rights to show a series or film to a UK audience, and only to a UK audience.

Similarly, they might lease the rights to a BBC product to a company in, say, Belgium, and not want them to broadcast to,say, the US market.

So, could using a VPN (virtual private network) circumvent geoblocking ?

DVD regional markings were relatively easy to overcome by hacking the player to change region, or make it region free (universal).

Well, to continue this unedifying saga, I acquired the Roku gizmo and hooked it up without undue difficulty. However, when the system went through its self-test function, communication with the internet was fine but there was no talking between the router and the receiver thingy.

This is a repeat of the problem experienced previously when the computer/telly would not connect wirelessly due to being thirty-odd feet from the router and with three brick walls in between. An off-the-shelf product using the mains wiring as a data cable solved that problem but this has a telephone plug/socket arrangement which is not compatible with the Roku unit. So Mrs Trousers is still without her iPlayer and my quality of domestic life has not improved.

However, in a desperate act of self preservation, I have arranged for an electrician to come and chase a new co-ax and landline connection into the wall so that the router and whole caboodle can be moved to the other end of the house where we generally live, work and have our being. This won't happen for a couple of weeks, so I hope Hancock doesn't do anything silly in the meantime.

Sanity partially preserved in today's sunshine and fist bike ride of the year. Blissykins! Apart from the bloody potholes . . .
