Hi Baggo, I think there was talk of Linn copying Ariston or Thorens, but nothing 100%, as for the choice of names that Linn adhere to, there is something that bring them to their choice, but I cant remember . Bob

Most of the text is a straight lift from entries in Wiki. Others in the industry at the time held some pretty strong views about the circumstances of how Jack Tiefenbrun (Linn) ‘obtained’ his design from Hamish Roberton (Ariston). I don’t know how the Thorens TD150 fitted into the story but there must be a connection. Sondek and TD150 parts were to some extent interchangeable, a popular tweak being to fit Sondek springs which were stronger to the TD150.

A very interesting read Greg, I am a fan of the LP12 as most on here will know and find it sad when they fight over things like this but, even the old Ariston and Fons turntables have their own followers. Bob

Thanks Greg - that certainly is interesting.

Back in the mid-eighties, I had an Ariston - proudly made in Scotland, it proclaimed - and it was not a bad piece of kit. I don't understand why the spindle support bearing was changed from a ball to something seemingly mechanically inferior. Mine had the ball arrangement.

But of all the turntables owned over many years, starting with a 201, my absolute favourite - don't laugh - was the little BD2. It was the most extraordinary value for money and with an Audio Technica and V15 MkIII, worked marvellously. I had three at various times and loved them, despite the disintegrating rubber bands suspending the motor!
