I have tried 10, 22 and 68uF in phono only to return to 10 on this new build, I could tell NO difference. Bob

Hi Colin,
Some 10µF/400V elcos plus some .01µF/2KV ceramic disc capacitors are on the way to you tomorrow. Sorry just missed the post today!

John

Hi/all
My thanks to Bob and John for sending me those parts So the phono 3S parts box is expanding so now as per my phono 2 I will still be using the SoniqsSAX 0.1 2.2uf capacitors from Matthew I was going to use the Russian o.1uf Teflon t3s I have for C1and C2 but their way to big
Now turning to the resistor again as per the phono2 has the takman and holco as listed here

My PHONO 2
Issue Two Board
has takman Carbons in R13/14 R21/22 R37/38 All the others are metal film 0.5% tolerance Holco which are not available now and were replaced with the PRP PR9372 Series Metal Film

I can’t stretch to the Z-foils sadly but want to do the same thing to the first stage and all the way through the board using the three type choices available to me which are the takman carbon and metal plus the replacements for the holco types are the PRP PR9372 Metal film

So my thoughts are to use the carbons in the single path all the way through given as I like their sound and the metal film for anode and cathode I know this is down to my preference in the end but I am just interested in general discussion about which of the types resistors list here you would use and where you would use them on the phono3S board and why
Colin

In the past I have tried carbon resistors Colin, cant remember which brand, but were not for me, I found they made the sound mussy and returned to metal film, Morgan Jones books also say give them a miss, the Z-Foils I used are only in the first stage, as recommended by John, eight resistors, just over £130.00 but I can say now, money very well spent . You mention 5%, R11/12, 13/14, 19/20 need to be 1% or better and measured and matched if possible. Bob

hi bob
a typo should have read 0.5% I'm not referring to the old carbon types but these here https://www.hificollective.co.uk/com...resistors.html

Colin, on the Hi-Fi Collective web site it say's 2% not .5%, 2% is still good but may make the RIAA correction a bit out, for example, 2% of R11/12 is 6320 ohms, where as 1% is 3160 ohms, I try to buy .1% for such circuits and select the two closest, in this case it would be + or - 316 ohms or better. Oops did it again yes the taxman carbons in the phon2 are the 2% types the others are holco the 0.5% types for R23/24 316k plus R25/26 39.2k the rest 1% Holco resistors which were used in the phono 2 build which sound very good when given good quality vinyl and shows up bad vinyl to well

And given that I only have a heavily modded Rega RB250 with an Ortofon moving magnet 2MM blue or a Goldring 1042 I think we are splitting hairs a bit on this for my set-up I am just trying to get some views on where best to place which type of the three resistor choices on the phono 3S board.
