Yes 6CA7 are different sounding to EL34, my first WAD kit was Kel34 early version with the round toroid output TXs and 6CA7. I later had a Kit34 with Svet EL34 and EI TXs, then a pair of decent 5-20 monoblocs with Svet EL34 and large EI OPTXs. That first amp though was brilliant, big open bouncy sound, if not exactly neutral, but very enjoyable and one of my favourite amps

Thanks, that's very interesting Richard. The KEL34 that I have is one of those early types with the toroid output transformers. I'm waiting on a few bits to arrive in the post, and hope to start work on the amp next week.

After that? well there is my original WAD kit - the very first one I ever built - a pair of KEL 80s. Now you have me wondering how they might sound with a quad of 6CA7s fitted in each one.

But first things first, I'll see how I get on with the KEL34.
