Stepping back a bit, I assume you have done a continuity check on both the voice coils? As you mentioned one was 'dead'.
Refoaming will not fix an open circuit voice coil...

Boondi,

Yes I saw the fleabay relisting too. That lowers my repair budget. The seller has however responded that he refoamed them himself and pointed me to where he got the kit to do it. The company that responded to say they no longer do this work because it's totally uneconomical has told me this was because of the runaround they get from the manufacturers. I might therefore ask them if they would do the repair if I supplied the kit, i.e. make use of their expertise and save them the runaround.

And I will be pointing my mate to the fleabay listing..... :-)

Snowman,

Yes you are right - I still need to do a continuity check on one of the voice coils. The speakers have the old style spring-loaded terminals which have all but been wrecked by the stiff QED 79 strand cable so that could be the problem too.

Edit : Continuity checked out OK on both woofers measured at the speaker terminals.

Thanks All,

Mark

I collected my refoamed AR18S speakers from Paul at Wembley Loudspeakers last week. He charged me £86.40 including VAT for the pair, which I thought was reasonable. It took a while to get it sorted because he was in the middle of moving out of the industrial unit in Shepherds Bush where he had been for many years and is now working from his workshop at home, and not missing the commute !

If you have speakers that need refoaming I would strongly recommend him.

Mark

Paul at Wembley Loudspeakers also told me that he had recently repaired a pair of Acoustic Research AR18s speakers for Hugh Padgham the grammy award winning producer who was still using them. I even found a picture of him with the AR18s on the shelf behind the mixer -see picture attached.

That's an excellent result. And nice to be proved wrong sometimes...

Perhaps worth a recommendation in the "Suppliers" section of the forum.
