well the 88 is designed for cascode duty in puters so why not use that?

You are not going to make an EF810 challenging cascode from an 88. We need Gm greater than 30mA/V to make the it work as we need the load resistor to be small to drive the RIAA eq properly and gain high.

I also don't like the sound of the 88 at low Va. but that just me.

I don't like the sound of 88 either bot neither do I have any success with 6c45pi, but maybe in cascode it is fixed. Would be very interested in your results then.
