As a PS

I just purchased something on Ebay, and one of the payment options (apart from PayPal) was to use a credit, or debit card.

Yep that’s always been the payment options on eBay and others

I also read online that eBay is getting rid of PayPal by 2023

This doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Confinity, the scheme I first joined, was bought by eBay a long time ago and has been the "in-house" payment system since. Why would they want to ditch such a monopolistic earner? For me, the system has been ideal and I purchase whatever with just one click. Additionally, it is very convenient for international purchases where credit cards can prove difficult, so I'm profoundly discomfited by PP's recent actions.

However, whilst recognising that I'm a dinosaur and obliged to become extinct for the common good (tuff titty indeed!), I'm not yet ready to be bullied into submission and buying something I don't want. So, I shall follow Colin's suggestions and see what happens. Good heavens - as if life wasn't exciting enough already!

Over the passage of time I and my wife have found using our smartphones and not our landline the cheaper option overall. We still have a landline but only use it to receive calls, these days mostly being phishing and scams In consequence, we are considering dispensing with a landline service completely. I think if memory serves right I am now paying £19 a month just for the line rental. My mobile gives me unlimited use of all services for £9 a month. Obviously you need to factor the in the cost of the mobile handset, but as Richard showed Colin, an android mobile can be relatively cheap. My experience is a mobile battery will last about four years (I keep mine on 24/7) before it needs replacement by which time, a handset upgrade is probably worth considering anyway.

Hi Col,

I logged in both ways this morning;

1, taking the default selection of a 6 digit number they sent by text to my mobile and entering it on the computer screen,

2, changing the selection to Call me, then checking and changing the phone number to my landline number, then entering the 4 digit number on the computer screen into my landline handset.

Both ways let me in fine. I don't know if they vary the number of digits but my landline just had 4.

You have to have a phone number logged with PP, so I assume you gave your landline number, but PP didn't actually say on the computer screen which number, they just gave the last 4 digits and left me to check it was the right one to use.

I'd give it another go and see if you can get that automated Call me to your landline. I got it fine and use that option sometimes with another bank when I can't lay hands on my mobile.

Re mobile phones in general. They're very good if you have reliable coverage in your area. And cheap, mine is £9 month for 1500 minutes Chat, unlimited Text and 4GB data. I never need more and there's no standing charge, just a change of phone every few years as Greg says for battery or obsolescence. I shouldn't bother with a landline really.

Hi Richard
Thanks
Yes I know the phone me page you are referring to but it give me an 11 digit code but today I don’t get that page that page now just asked to add a mobile phone.Rrrrrr
I have today spent an hour on the phone with an Irish guy from the call center in Ireland. I have explained my entire experience with this problem even how I get logged in to PP by the back door method which is not really a back door but what I have to do is enter the pass word go thru the I’m not a robot.thing hit the Bach button in Google then hit the refresh button this brings me back to PayPal

With a large blue button that says something is wrong, I click on that button and I’m logged in but I have to do this all the time
This guy I phoned today has watch me do this on his pc and said he will phone me back in an hour and get this fixed well I live in hope
Just an update on what’s happening
Colin

Hi Richard/All
Well I am back guys he did phone me back at 1.30 pm
I have just got off the phone with him now at 2.40pm
Is the problem fixed NO? But he has said that our PayPal as accounts will not be canceled.
Now he has ashore me he recognises the problems we are having and has recorded our talk and escalating this to the top for a fix he confirms we can’t have this happening or we will lose customers for sure so in the mean time we just have to carry on login by the back door for a week or two until they get a fix
Note to Baggy if you read this try to login use the free number I gave you and ask for complaints and ask the speak to Richard if you can or give them my name and tell them its about the landline log on issues and let’s see where that takes us but our accounts are not canceling bottom line here is PayPal recognises there is a problem now
So let’s how it goes
Colin
