Re: dispute further
In which case MQ couldn't know from a pic whether it was theirs or not. It's all speculation, it's somehow too tempting to comment, which probably isn't helpful.

Re: dispute further
that's part of the point, philip, I know about a fair few transformers, having researched both commerical ones (and learned a little about design) and I have never seen any others which look like MQ.
Its not just the shrouds that I use as basis for that, its the same fine laminations, the same profile of the air gap, and the same paint finish of the laminations, too. Added to the fact that I got them from the US described as MQ, from welbornes amp which were known to be MQ at the time. Put that all together, its why I am convinced they are indeed MQ. One thought did occur to me which is highly unlikely, that someone has swapped over the end shrounds, but to do that, would mean the transformer would fall apart, the butt end would fall off, and the air gap fall out, and you'd never get it back together properly. To do that for the sake of less than £100 is very unlikely indeed. And they show no physical signs of a botched job. Added to the fact that physically, they still appear, the stacking that is, identical to Mq. George alledged that they were electraprint, now I wouldn't grumble if they were, as EP are $300 each, very expensive. This is by the by. "The audiophile who wants the ultimate in "Big Tone," regardless of price, should consider the Electra-Print VT2-KB with the VAIC VV52. This combination easily had the best balance, biggest bass and the best low and mid-bass clarity with our SE amp and speakers." from here, where MQ was reviewed to. http://www.meta-gizmo.com/tri/vtv-se.html Here is a pic. of an amp using EP, note the shrouds don't overlap the edge like above, and the colour of the finish, its not as good by any standards http://cgi.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/auc....1290372&1&3&1& http://pic6.audiogon.com/i/a/f/1190761108.jpg finally, I have found an expired listing on audiogon for some welborne laurels, what I have maintainted all along is that the seller I bought them off said they were from this, I did have a schematic, but that final cruicial link is now missing. but if you look at the pics, the tx's look very similar indeed. http://64.233.183.104/search?q=cache...nk&cd=13&gl=uk a pic of the amp that the tx's were alledgely from http://www.chicagoaudio.org/welborne/Laurel.jpg http://64.233.183.104/search?q=cache...lnk&cd=3&gl=uk from the above a quote. "Below you will find reviews of the Moondogs, all of which were carried out with the MagneQuest DS-025 output transformers " I think I have done more than enough to offer substantial evidence that they are indeed MQ, whihc I have maintained all along. and further proof that mr mq's memory isn't always reliable http://www.audioasylum.com/forums/ma...sages/930.html Last edited by Ianm2; 11th October 2007 at 07:43 PM. |

Re: dispute further
hi George, mike has indicated that he no longer wishes for any correspondance on the issue. Perhaps that's wrong, I believe a maker does have some duty to provide info. on 'old' products or support, even if bought s/h, and he doesn't seem to want to bother about that side of customer service. sad but true.
All I have done here is present my reasons for believing its an mq, so I hope you don't take it as an attack, more a conviction. best wishes Last edited by Ianm2; 12th October 2007 at 02:50 PM. |

Re: dispute further
These are the wire colours George has,
Quote:
http://diyparadiso.com/mod-laurel4.htm The colours seem to match though the pic doesn't show the TX on the end of them. Ian and George now need a schematic for the Laurel 300B to check those wire connections and meter them for the expected resistances for those connections. |

Re: dispute further
Hi George,
They look to be good TXs and Ian thought they were from Laurel 300B. If you can get the construction circuit (showing which colour wire goes where) we can have a look at what we'd expect the TX wire resistances to measure to confirm this. Rich |
