Re: WD paper in oil caps
What, if any benefits are there in using PIO's?
I happily use good quality polyprops in my Valve kit. At least LCR ones and so far am very happy with the improvement i get over cheaper polyesters etc. I used LCR polyprops in my leak stereo20 and like the more "modern" faster sound they give over The original leaky ones. Is it just another question of personal taste or am I missing something here? Andy |

Re: WD paper in oil caps
there's no hard and fast rules it comes down to a matter of personal taste, you may like the sound they give, you may not, but it is worth the experiment

Re: WD paper in oil caps
Judging from what you have said about your enjoyment of the polyprop sound, I'd suspect you'll want to remain with this. That's where I am. However, as David suggests, until you try, you don't know and certainly some really love the effect of coupling PIO's in their amps. Suck it and see is the only option. No-one can advise on this. Your ears alone will have to be the judge.

Re: WD paper in oil caps
Would anyone care to suggest where they'd best be deployed in a WD88 ?
Cheers, Mike.

Re: WD paper in oil caps
c1, 2, 5, 6 to start with
I would suggest just doing c1 first to get an idea, instead of over egging the pudding or c5/6, the resistor across c1 may well lessen the effect http://wduk.worldomain.net/images/wd88vapt2a.jpg |

Re: WD paper in oil caps
Thanks Ian, I might have a go at C5/6 as they're a tad easier to get at. Or maybe C1/2 ....er.... hmmmmm.... <wanders off rubbing chin>

Re: WD paper in oil caps
I think Ian may have slightly misled you. Certainly C1 and C5/6 are coupling caps which are recognised as good for PIO replacement as they are directly in the signal line, but these ralate to one channel only. If you are contemplating the upgrade you need to consider the same caps on the corresponding channel also. C2 (and its equivalent on the other channel) is not coupling and not the first place I'd go with PIO's.

Re: WD paper in oil caps
Hi Greg,
I've pretty much settled on C5/6. The driver boards are built as 'mirror image' pairs if you see what I mean, and the caps etc are 'labeled up' the same on each board. Hmmm....a picture paints a thousand words etc, see attached pdf. Thanks for the tip though Cheers, Mike.
