So a sort of happy ending. Apologies for sounding so negative and then go away on a quick holiday without further explanation. But you know, I saw exactly this 'pre2' on eBay about 10 days ago. Perhaps there are a few of them about!

Yes it's the Blore Edwards switch used in the original article by Neville Roberts I think. There's lots of good stuff inc the passive resistor calculators on Neville's site,

I got the valve pre case when I ordered the passive pre with the blue alps pot so perhaps I wasn't the only one.
