Trouble is with formatting I also wipe the drive but last time I did this I discovered a problem I hadn’t even thought of which was a software licenses thinks it’s been installed on a different Computer
so now you only have two of the three licenses left or none if you only had one license which happened to me once and would’t let me activate the software but after contacting the software company they reissued a new license free of charge so thumps up for them or I would’ve had to buy a new license
Anyone know a way round this problem when you want to wipe a Hard drive

Tell us what is in your startup items. We should be able to spot the standard ones.

OK I have gone through all the start-ups in system config one at a time and have restarted four which seems OK no errors or pop up s
my documents file now open nice and fast until I restart my anti virus software so the problem seems to be with my anti virus software running in the background

Hi Colin,

We have AVG Free on XP, Vista and 2 Windows 7 machines no problem.

Have you checked scan settings?

From main screen > scan options on the scan now button > manage scheduled scans > edit scan schedule which finally gets you into settings for scheduled scan!

3 tabs in there, under schedule sttings make sure it's not set to run every hour or run at computer start up. One of those is the default, can't remember which, but switch them off by selecting the radio button for run at a specific time interval to stop it doing this and choosing a day and time to suit you.

You can also set the other 2 tabs for how to scan and what to scan but they aren't the problem, the problem is that if you don't change the default the thing seems to be scanning away either from switch on or every hour.

With AVG free, I set the scan every night before I go to bed and select auto switch off.

That way I don't have to wait for it to finish, or have it slow down any browsing session.
