Re: kel 84
i can see both your points, i will try and rectify the problem, but if i cant ill see what can be done.
If the transformers arent reliably good enough to not induce hum then something needs to be sorted. Having said that, im sure it can be overcome. Everything just needs to be optimised. Ive been told so many ways to cure this problem (albeit a small problem) that one of them must work. I expect it to run hot, i'd be more concerned if it didnt, and personally, my hum isnt that bad, just slightly annoying. It is a very good amp though, easily the best ive owned (or heard for that matter, bearing in mind my experience is limited) |

Re: kel 84
HI Will, my posting was a veiled criticism of the KEL84 kit. I should not have had to try three transformers. Nick Lucas was very helpful and obliging and I got one that was fine in the end.
The successful transformer was 'double-dipped'. Last edited by andrew ivimey; 24th July 2006 at 08:33 AM. |

Re: kel 84
hi all, just to let you know, after about 3 hours ish , hardly any noise from transformer. can only hear it if i put my ear about a foot away. then its a very low hum. when playing music, cant hear a thing. dont know if it wil go, but the longer its on , the better it gets.

Re: kel 84
Andrew, that was in the old WAD days. Current transformers have been vacuum impregnated and the outer laminations glued to avoid any 'internal' vibration.
As we bought the stock from WAD we don't have a huge history of these kits, but the ones we have sold so far have been generally trouble free other than the 'whistling' one which we are looking into as soon as we get it back. |

Re: kel 84
Would packing the transformer with Silicone Sealant help reduce the noise?
I have problems with noisy transformers all the time, not with the Kel84 (I have'nt got one yet) but with other projects. |
