Hi Col, oh bugger, yes that's the sort of thing I expected, going back 20 years with windows - never load the first version. Computers are good when they're working but pure frustration when they're not. Having recently taken a week just getting a printer to work on our home network (ie with more than one computer) I was reminded how **** they can be and how non consumer friendly they are. Any other product on the retail market would have long since disappeared, good luck.

Hi Col, we got daughter's Win8.1 desktop, installed Classic Shell and all is good. Then I noticed Win10 had tried to automatically update it. Some research shows that if you delete KB3035583 from installed updates it stops Win10 installing. It can always be reinstalled later if needed

Hi Col, no probs, I should have said that KB3035583 is the one that puts the white Win10 install icon down on the right of the taskbar. If you delete it from installed updates it will disappear. Once it's been deleted it may show up again on the next check for updates list. At that point right click and hide it. It won't then load and can then be re-instated from hidden updates anytime

When you update from (say) W7 or W8.1 to W10 do you lose all the stuff in your documents folders and bookmarks n stuff like that? I've never done an OS upgrade/change before so wondered how it works? Both JTS and me are getting the W10 prompts on our LapPlops.

Hi Dave
All your My Documents Stuff will be directed in to a new folder called Windows OLD but I would still do a backup of your stuff to be safe.

You may lose some programs like your firewall virus tools as Microsoft want you to use there’s but just reinstall new windows 10 versions of your software
If you install win 10 do a custom install and read the agreement you may not want to install it due to the privacy rules check out YouTube on this

Once you have install win 10 and played around with it a bit burn your copy to a is file then to DVD disc of usb stick and do a clean install

it will ask for the key but just click skip and do this later as you don’t need the key link for download make sure you download the right versions for your pcs

Hope this helps
Good luck
Colin

Hi Dave, all, yes from memory as Col says, you get an .old file on the desktop which was your old user file so make sure anything outside of that at least is backed up.

We did a Vista Sony laptop and a Win7 HP laptop to Win8.1 and changed an XP desktop for a Win8 machine. Consider,

Programmes, I needed to buy a later version of Adobe Elements as the earlier one wouldn't run even under compatibility mode. My old Lotus suite also finally bit the dust so I'll just have to convert any old Lotus files if needed. I run Open Office now.

Laptop drivers, our Sony was a nightmare going from Vista to Win8.1. Touch pad, audio, camera, wifi, ethernet all needed downloading from various sites so have another machine to hand and working! The only driver we didn't manage was ethernet so still no cable use but fortunately got wifi and the rest working again. I don't know if Sony are particularly bad or use their own drivers etc. The later Win7 HP laptop was fine and easy.

Security, one quirk is that a Win10 machine can act as a server to other machines on the web without you knowing. I gather it can be switched off but check.

Re-installing, if you need to do this your machine will re-install whatever it had originally (Win7 or 8) and you'll have to load Win10 again on top. (Only a machine originally loaded with Win10 will re-load Win10 afaik.)

Hi Dave/Richard
Yep if you go with the custom install you can switch off most of this stuff before it installs

Then you can switch on or off what you want in Settings after its installed Also check advanced settings in windows update you may want to turn your location off as well

but it depends on how you want to use windows 10
Watch out how you setup cortana if using it as it wants you contact and emails calendar and location to work

Some YouTube windows 10 stuff https://www.youtube.com/results?sear...ws+10+features
