Default "WAD" Mullard 5-20 me too

As you may have see from my first post yesterday I have just rescued a pair of these and am almost blissed out listening to these. I wonder what the newer ones sound like - I cant speak from experience but prefer older Nakamichi's to newer ones - when the reference level was analog rather than cd - wmongst the last tape decks Nak made they even called their decks CD 1 CD 2 etc!

These were still good but competed with CD and lost to my mind some finesse or subtlety. Anyway reading the above as I catch up on the forum I see transformer covers were an issue and I have been wondering if there is a supplier of such.

The larger side pieces and wooden approach doesnt do it for me, as it further adds to there 'mass' - something to increase WAF and tidy up - at least covers - Any other possibilities or photos that i can be pointed at?

Hi Ian and welcome,

If you or others can identify the Tx manufacturer, they would be best for advise/supply on covers. I don't know who HFW used in the very early days of their kits but I'm sure some members here will.

Best wishes,

Greg

Thanks again Greg

As a newcomer I have yet to delve into the - is it the 'WAD general' section where papers re the early designs lie. I might be getting the assembly instructions from the original builder - the tx supplier might be listed there too.

I appreciate your advice that heat resistant paint will assist appearance and presentation somewhat and will shop for that.

A cage might be called for. It does spoil the ship for a ha'pworth of tar being so exposed. However it'll be more than a ha'pworths of work to create one.

Re. transformer covers: is it possible that the company in question was SP Wound Components, who made the trannies for the K5881 (circa 1997-98) ?

If so, the contact there is Geoff Budden. In 2007 he supplied me with an upgraded replacement mains TX for my K5881. Nice chap to deal with.

Ian, if you PM me, I can supply an email address for him.
