Question re Kat Bush "Aerial"

This is a grower! On first listen you think "What???" but it creeps up on you. It is most distinctly Kate Bush as she ever was but with an extra layer of maturity and mastery of her art.

Sonically (my side 3 problems apart) it is a masterpiece.

Who but Dame Kate Bush (as she should be!) could blend together Rolf Harris, his didgeridoo, birdsong and washing machines, coming up with a brilliant work of art.

Listening to this made me reflect on where 'pop/rock' ends and 'classical' begins. Some of the music on this album could have been written by Phillip Glass, albeit in a laid-back mood!

Just buy it! (But I do urge you to give it several listens before engaging critical thought processes)

But then - I'm a big fan Could you tell?

...and I must add that if you like the earlier works, you could listen to 'Hounds of Love' in the same listening session and you would never see the join!

I wasn't too impressed with my copy either - noisy.

This album is not exactly an easy listen. And I'm sure after repeated listens, I'll enjoy it. But it will be all that much harder through the noise.

Yes - it does need a few listens, but I find that if you treat it as 'Stream of Consciousness' stuff and just let it roll over you it soon gets there!

My supplier is quite willing to exchange my copy but suggests a few plays first on the basis that the muck in the grooves will be excavated (I don't think it will work)! If your copy is noisy after a few plays I would expect your supplier to be equally willing to exchange it. I hope that turns out to be the case!

I've just bought it heavily discounted (CD) to £7-49.

Both Cds play properly. no vinyl in Bedford.

It is very well recorded; lovely dynamics, depth and imaging. Someone knows her onions.

The songs sit up and beg attention. They are all worth listening to. Is that Eberhad Weber? I have a couple of his ECM old LPs from the seventies (frightening!)

All that 'washing machine' stuff reminds me a) of when she went onto one about a home computer and b) Frank Zappa's masterful usage of daily detritus and mundane baggage that goes with living the american way like e.g 'wind up working in a gas station' zoot alures indeed!

ah hey! I can't help preferring what Bowie's young anericans got up to, or Zappa's dynamo hum, zircn encrusted tweezers and cathlic girls in the somethingorother basement but.......

'Aerial' has gallons full of stuff to recommend it - worth waiting for, why not!!

I am just going through one of those "play loads of Zappa, and wonder why you keep fogetting just how good he was" periods. I recon there is more quality music on the three Joes Garage LP's than most musicians manage in a lifetime.

right from the start when he was playing around with the chap who became captain beefhart, frank zappa showed what an extraordinary musician he was. That he wrapped it up in rock with the odd excursion he made it difficult and extremely demanding for the musicians with whom he played, when there was so much else happening, but IMTO he was utterly extraordinary.

there's something beguiling and simple but also huge about Joe's garage - wow!
