Hi, Many thanks all for your suggestions.
I'll sample all that I can find.
Managed to find a long lost album through the Mike Harding suggestion via Muckram Wakes to the Albion Band and Rise up like the sun.
Will have to find me a copy on CD now.

cheers

The Oyster Band probably fit best into the folk rock category.
To my mind their best album is “Freedom and Rain” with June Tabor, perhaps because it’s rare for June Tabor to sing happy songs, but she has a great voice. They have their own annual festival which takes place in Leicester. A result of this is another good album, “Big Session Volume 1”.
One track features Show of Hands, in my opinion the best duo in British Folk. Although guitar and fiddle based, they flesh the songs out with other instruments and are definitely not laid back. Excellent albums by them include Country Life and Lie of the Land. Their latest, Witness, includes a song called Roots, which has actually got airplay.
Phil Beer half of Show of Hands was a member of the Albion Band when they were at their most electric, particularly good Albion albums include 1990, Show Me A Saddle and I’ll Trade You A Car, and Under the Rose.
The founder of the Albion Band was Ashley Hutchings, who was the original Fairport Convention bass player and left them to be a founder member of Steeleye Span.
Good early Fairport albums include What We Did On Our Holidays and Unhalfbricking, while more modern albums include Red and Gold and Jewel in the Crown.
Dave Pegg Simon Nicol and Gerry Conway play with Steve Gibbons and PJ Wright as The Dylan Project. Their Albums show up Brian Ferrys’ latest attempt at Dylan.
Apart from the Steve Gibbons Band, PJ Wright also plays lead guitar in Little Johnny England another Folk Rock band who are worth checking out.
But the best way to enjoy any of the music of these groups is live, and they all meet my criterion for proper musicians, they drink with their public.
The line-up for the Fairport Cropredy Festival this year is excellent, it includes, Seth Lakeman, Strawbs, Show of Hands, Richard Thompson Band, Wishbone Ash, Jools Holland Orchestra, Fairport Convention. Their 40th anniversary, and about the 25th time I’ve attended.

I'm strugling to believe no-one has mentioned Martin Carthy, his wife, Norma Waterson, and their daughter, Eliza Carthy yet, if you want high quality English folk music. June Tabour has been mentioned, but should be mentioned again.
