"I'd just do a folded horn design"

The problem is that imperfect horns distort the sound aswel as amplify it. Distortion I can live with, but amplified distortion? So you have to get the horn perfect. I have heard one set of perfect horns and a whole load of imperfect ones.

These cheap OB's in a small personal setting get the best subtleties out of music akin to Lowthers played soft with a 45 amp, but without the harshnes at certain frequencies that trouble my ears, and without the colouration of the imperfect horn.

OK I'll bight, the vifa woofers used in Ariels sound like they look. Hard plastic. I am really very cross with LO for making such a flowery speach about how important correct midrange units are and then he went and produced this cack.

Hi Paul

where does the plastic come from? My ariels are paper, in fact they are the same units that are spec'd in the avatar....so where does the £3k come from?? especially when the avatars weigh 20kg and the ariels weigh 35kg. Anybody know whats in the avatars?

In defence of LO quote from PB at last eggfest "They don't sound anything like mine".

Regards

Ed

Ed,

Here is the manufacturer's datasheet for the Vifa P13WH driver used in the Ariel (as specified by LO) P13WH

It's a polyprop. cone. If yours are paper they are not as Lynn designed them and may be all the better for that.

Oh the Ariels reference page on Lynn's site - Areils

Strangely like Ed I also had the feeling the Vifa drivers in the Ariels were treated paper , until Jonathan Noble repeated told me they were not and I looked up the driver specs . Somewhere in the text it must say they are paper, but it also for sure says they are polyprop in the design blurb too, so there must be a confusing comment somewhere .

They sound a lot nicer in the bass without the impedance correction section , that's for sure .

Lynn makes the statement several times on his site that they sound like paper drivers (to him) maybe that is it.

Strange,
I mentioned the cones used in the Living Voice and Heybrook's because I was also under the impression that they were doped paper cones from the same series, albeit smaller, doh.

While I think on the whole paper/pulp is a better material (possibly the best musically) I would not dismiss a speaker simply because it uses polyprop's.
I would not however want to go back to tiny 5 1/4 drivers (even 2 of them)better suited to mini monitors, even if they do measure smoother at the crossover.

hm, my friend keeps trying to foist some polyprop bass units on me and I am trying to preserve my integrity with good old fashioned 'fast' paper cones.

Weren't e.g. KEf a compromise with their coated paper cones (B110, B200)?

But my friend has a point, possibly, when he says that paper is so noisy
and rubs his finger down a paper cone. It IS noisy compared to polyprop, so surely adds resonance etc?

I don't know.
